Chapter 29: Saturday, 10 a.m.
Dom read it twice.
Then he took his reading glasses off and folded them and put them in his breast pocket, very slowly.
The card stayed in his hand.
"Saturday at ten," he said.
"Yes."
"In the chair."
"Where else would I ask you?"
He looked at the card again.
"I'll have to check my calendar," he said, perfectly serious.
Then he walked down the courthouse steps to his car without another word.
I stood there with my mouth open.
He didn't call Thursday night.
He didn't call Friday.
No tomatoes on the back step Friday morning. No bread.
By Friday night I'd decided he was going to Arizona after all.
Carmela slept over on my couch, because she said somebody had to keep me from pulling my own teeth.
"He's coming," she said, eating my cereal out of the box.
"You don't know that."
"I have money on it. I always know."
On Saturday at nine-fifty I was in operatory one in my navy scrubs.
My hands were shaking.
I've done root canals on men who owed money to the Scarpas. My hands never shook.
At nine fifty-eight the bell over the front door rang.
Dom walked in.
White shirt, sleeves rolled. No tie. His hair still wet from the shower.
He had the appointment card in his hand.
"Dr. Lentini," he said to Carmela at the front desk. "I have a ten o'clock."
"She'll see you now," Carmela said, in a voice like a game show.
He walked down the hall to operatory one.
He didn't walk this time.
He sat down in my chair and put his hands on the armrests, and his knuckles didn't go white.
He looked up at me.
"I'm here," he said.
I clipped the paper bib around his neck because I didn't know what else to do with my hands.
Then I sat down on my stool and rolled up beside him.
The overhead light was on. I turned it off.
"You didn't call," I said.
"You asked me in writing. On an appointment card." His mouth twitched. "I thought I should keep the appointment."
Carmela was in the hall.
The shoe repair lady was in the waiting room. I could see her purse through the door.
I didn't care.
"Dom," I said. "I married you once because a table was going to kill me. I divorced you because nobody asked me if I wanted to."
"I know."
"Nobody's asking now. There's no table. No rule. No river." I took his right hand off the armrest. "So I'm asking. Will you marry me?"
He didn't answer right away.
