Chapter 30: Lights
"Nonna," I said. "We haven't even talked about..."
"You've talked enough. Twice you've talked." She walked past me into the clinic like she owned it. "Last time you got married in a church full of men who wanted you in the river. This time you get married where I grow tomatoes."
Dom stood at the bottom of the stairs holding the lasagna.
"Signora," he said. "It would be an honor."
"I know it would." She sat down in my waiting room. "Last Sunday of September. I already told the priest. He comes to the yard or he doesn't come."
He came to the yard.
Nonna's backyard on Holmes Street was a long narrow strip behind the house, between two brick walls.
Tomato plants down one side, staked with broom handles, still heavy in late September.
A fig tree in the corner that her husband planted in 1964 and wrapped in burlap every winter until he died.
A grape arbor over the back door, gone half wild.
The week before the wedding the whole neighborhood came to help, the way they'd come with brooms in April.
