Chapter 17: Lapstrake
On Monday morning Lukas took the door off the beadboard wall.
Greta lay on her mattress and watched him do it in his socks, with a screwdriver, very carefully.
"You could just leave it open," she said.
"I could."
He lifted it off the hinges and carried it down the ladder on his back.
By Wednesday it was a shelf over the stove, holding her coffee maker and his terrible percolator side by side.
The cot went to the yard for the apprentice to nap on at lunch.
The dog took the whole of the mattress for itself and let them have the edges.
Greta's days started at the yard and ended at the boathouse.
Somehow the crew followed her both directions.
The old mechanic came up every evening with a reason.
A rudder, a question about glue, a pan of hotdish he claimed he needed gone.
The apprentice came up every evening without one.
On Thursday he stood at the end of the shop in safety glasses.
Lukas was feeding a stick of white oak into a long box of plywood and stovepipe.
Steam was pouring out of the far end.
