Chapter 30: Finishing Work
Lukas looked at the lawyer for a long moment.
"Tomorrow," he said. "Ten o'clock."
Greta drove him up the bluff road on Saturday morning.
There was a FOR SALE sign at the lodge gate, small and tasteful, from a broker in Chicago.
The lawn was full of leaves nobody had raked.
"I'll be in the truck," Greta said.
"You don't have to wait."
"I'm not waiting. I'm sitting in a truck."
He kissed her and got out.
She watched him walk up the stone steps and go in through the big doors alone.
The great hall was half empty.
Lukas told her about it later, all of it, sitting on the dock.
The chairs from her wedding were stacked against the wall.
Sheets covered the long table.
Margit stood by the stone fireplace in a gray cardigan, with no pearls.
"You came," she said.
"You asked."
She didn't ask him to sit.
"My trial is in January," she said. "My lawyer says a letter from a former priest would carry weight. A letter from family."
