Chapter 17: County Line
The handler's den.
My town.
The cook at her register, the old man at the counter, the boy on crutches eating hash browns.
"You'll be riding on two hundred people," I said. "Half of them can't walk to the mailbox."
"Then they'll be easy to clear," Arlis said.
He nodded to the split-eared man.
"Take her to the county line. Tonight. If she crosses back onto pack land, she's anybody's."
The split-eared man took my arm above the elbow.
The bond went wild.
I felt both of them at once, like two dogs throwing themselves against a fence.
"Don't," I said across the hall. "Don't fight. You'll give him what he wants."
Deacon was standing very still by the door.
He looked at me.
Then he looked at his uncle.
Then he walked into the middle of the floor, where I'd been standing, and turned to face the Elder.
"Write this down," he said.
The Elder picked up his pen.
"I'm Abner Lovett's son. I was his heir until Monday." His voice carried to the back wall without him raising it. "I give it up. The seat. The name on the seat. All of it."
