Chapter 20: The Leash
Deacon opened the door before I could.
He just stood in it, bare-chested in the frost, and the split-eared man took one step back off my cinderblock.
"You paid the men who shot me," Deacon said.
"Yes, sir."
"In February. And Tuesday."
"Yes, sir."
Deacon's hands had closed.
I came up behind him in the quilt and put my palm flat between his shoulder blades.
I felt him breathe out.
"What are you trading?" I said.
The split-eared man looked at me over Deacon's shoulder.
"Everything I know," he said. "Out loud. To whoever you want."
"For what?"
He unzipped his jacket.
He pulled his shirt collar down off his right shoulder.
The skin under his collarbone was swollen and dark, and black veins ran out from a puckered hole toward his chest.
"He shot me himself," the man said. "After February. Your two came home alive, and that wasn't the plan."
"What was the plan?" Bowie said from behind me.
"The plan was you died in Graylick, and Graylick got the blame."
Nobody said anything.
