Chapter 15: The Well Room
The cellar door stood behind a row of copper pots in the kitchen.
At nine o'clock the cooks had gone, and the only light was the stove pilot.
Imogen turned the iron key, and the door opened on a stair that smelled of wet stone.
We went down in our bare feet.
I tracked each step, keeping my breathing quiet.
At sixty the stair ended in a corridor lit by a blue glow with no lamp behind it.
"Cameras?" I whispered.
"Two. I've seen the schedule."
"And you know where?"
"Left of the arch, high. We go under it on our knees."
We crawled under it.
The corridor opened into a round chamber the size of a church.
I stopped on the threshold and forgot how to move.
The room was lined floor to ceiling with glass.
Tall vessels stood in racks along the curved walls, each one the height of a child, each one full of silver light.
