Chapter 22: The Finale

The Well was glowing when we reached the garden.

The cameras were still running.

Delphine's crew stood at their stations with their hands off the controls, because the feed was no longer hers to cut.

Every woman who was left stood in the grass in her gray robe.

The five other alphas stood in a half circle behind the blue suit.

Tilly's stretcher rested at the garden's edge, with two nurses beside it, and I saw her lift one hand and wave.

I waved back.

My mother stood near the hedge with the Ironwood guards around her.

Hiram stood among them, with his hands bound, his chin on his chest.

Delphine was at the rim of the Well.

She had her tablet in her fist, and she was pressing the same corner of it, again and again.

"The board is wrong," she told the crowd. "A technical error. A sabotaged feed. Ladies, please, remain calm."

Nobody was calm.

Imogen walked out of the crowd and stopped in the middle of the lawn.

"I withdraw," she said. "From the Luna Trials. I concede my place."
