Chapter 24: Mating Season
The lodge slept for most of the next day, and I slept longer than anyone.
At dusk I woke on the boathouse couch with Rook's arm over my waist.
His stitches had held.
Mine, on the inside, had held too.
The lantern was out, and the planks let in the last red light from the lake.
"You're awake," he said into my hair.
"I'm thinking."
"Dangerous."
"About you."
"Worse."
I rolled onto my back and looked at him.
Black hair, amber eyes, thirty-one years old, and no cameras anywhere.
For the first time since I had met him, he looked like a man with nothing to hide.
"I owe you a night," I said.
"You owe me nothing."
"I owe myself one. The first two were a fight and a grief. I want one that's neither."
His eyes darkened.
"Tell me what you want, Juniper."
"I want you slow."
I sat up and pulled my shirt over my head.
I was twenty-four, and the leash was gone from my chest.
For the first time, I could feel my own want with nothing pressing on it.
It was clean and enormous.
