Chapter 13: Iron Wagon
The iron wagon had a bench, a bucket and a window the width of my hand.
Through the slot I watched Harrow Gap shrink into a smear of smoke.
I counted the rivets in the door to keep from counting the sound Teo made hitting the wagon.
Fourteen rivets in the door, eleven in the ceiling, and each one settled on its string, warm and exact.
It was the only comfort I had.
At dusk the wagon stopped.
The door swung open, and Vesk climbed in with a lantern and a covered tray.
A guard shut the door behind him and dropped the bar.
Vesk sat on the other bench and set the tray between us.
There was bread, cheese and a green pear.
"You have not eaten since noon," he said.
"I'd like the guard to taste it first."
"The guard is outside."
"Then you can."
He looked at me for a moment, then tore off a piece of the bread, ate it, and cut a slice of the pear.
He ate that too, and held out the plate.
