Chapter 20: The Bill
Every head in the courtroom turned.
Not to me. To the back row, where Alastair sat in his dark wool coat with two of his men.
The judge banged her gavel once.
"Mr. Kesterson, you'll speak through counsel."
Lucius turned back around. He'd done what he wanted.
His lawyer stood up smoothly.
"Your Honor, the defense would like to call Mr. Alastair Shardlow tomorrow morning. If the state is going to parade a rival family's men through this hearing, the court should know where their money came from."
The judge looked at the back row.
Alastair stood up before anybody asked him to.
"I'll be here," he said.

He was gray, with a bad knee, and he'd worked for Alastair's father since before Alastair could walk.
I sat on the bed and pretended not to listen.
"Don't do this, son," the old man said. "Say you didn't know. Say your father kept it from you. Both of those are true."
"Both of those are true," Alastair said. "And they're not enough."
