Chapter 21: Three Kings
Maricela's POV
On the sixth of January my mother set the rosca de reyes on the oak table in Boerne.
It was the size of a wagon wheel.
It was ringed with candied fig and quince, and she had baked it herself at four in the morning.
Erwin stood over it with the knife and a worried face.
"How do I know where the baby is?" he said.
"You don't," my mother said. "That's the point. Cut."
He cut.
The four of us sat around the table, with the Boerners nowhere in sight.
Jakob sat on my left, in a clean flannel shirt, and under the table his boots were on either side of my feet.
I slid my left foot between them and rested my instep against the inside of his ankle.
He did not look at me.
He reached for the chocolate pot, and the muscle in his jaw ticked.
I moved my foot up his calf an inch.
"Maricela," my mother said. "You're quiet."
"I'm eating, Mama."
"Eat faster, it's getting cold."
