Chapter 13: The Seawall

He drove south without a word, and I did not tell him where to go.

He took the shore road through Narragansett, past the closed beach clubs, and stopped at the end of the seawall.

The engine ran and the heater ticked.

Black water hit the stones below us, and the January wind rocked the car on its springs.

Neither of us had spoken since the club door.

"Turn it off," I said.

He turned off the engine.

The windows began to fog at once.

"Now talk," I said.

"What do you want me to say?"

"Tell me you don't want me."

He turned his head.

"Rebelo."

"It's an order. Say it. Tell me to get out of your car."

His hands tightened on the wheel.

"No," Riccardo said.

I had never heard that word from him.

It landed low in my stomach and stayed there.

"I said it's an order."

"I heard what it is." He turned in the seat to face me. "No. I won't say it, because it isn't true."

"You can't refuse me."

"Watch me."

"Ten weeks," I said, and my voice shook. "Ten weeks you let me tie you down and tell you to kneel."

"Yes," he said.

"You knew whose hand held the chain."

"Yes," he said again.

"And last night you said tomorrow, and I said tomorrow, and you let me."

"I was a coward." He didn't look away. "I wanted one more night with you not knowing."

I slapped him.

It cracked in the small car, and my palm burned.

His head turned with it.

He brought his face back slowly, with the mark rising red on his cheekbone and his eyes gone black.

"Again?" he said, very low.

I stared at him.

"Again, if you want it," he said. "I'm not going anywhere."

I hit the buckle of his seat belt instead, and it flew back, and I climbed across the console into his lap.

My green dress rode up to my hips.

I straddled him with my knees against the seat, and the steering wheel pressed into my back.

I took his face in both hands, and I kissed him with teeth.

He kissed me back hard enough to bruise.

His hands closed on my hips and dragged me down onto the hard length of him through his trousers.

I ground against it and heard him groan into my mouth.
