Long tables stood in the Portuguese club hall, and the smell of beef broth and mint rose up the stairs.
Every Fox Point family cooked for a week.
On Sunday the whole parish walked behind a child in a white dress who carried a silver crown on a cushion.
She was seven, and she took it very seriously, and a band played behind her in red jackets.
The priest blessed the crown.
Then everyone sat down for sopas, the bread soaked in broth with cabbage and a sprig of mint, and they ate it for three hours.
I sat at the family table with a bowl in front of me and my stepbrother on my left.
Four aunts sat across from us, in black dresses and good gold, and watched us over their spoons.
"Pass the bread," Riccardo said to me.
"Pass it yourself, irmão."
"Irmão," the oldest aunt repeated.
She said it slowly, and she weighed every syllable.
"Stepbrother," said another aunt. "So close, the two of you. So helpful at the pier."
