Chapter 15: Executive Assistant
I called Celine at seven the next morning.
She picked up on the first ring, which she had never done in her life.
"I didn't send you anything," she said.
"You sent me your mother's phone."
Silence.
"I can't talk," she said. "I start my new job at nine."
"What job?"
"Executive assistant to the owner of Ironvale." Her voice wobbled and then came back hard. "Spence set it up in October. So I'm not going to be the cousin who cuts nails forever, okay?"
She hung up.
Bennet was standing in my kitchen doorway, holding two cups of coffee.
"Executive assistant to the owner," he said.
"Do you have one?"
"I have a chief of staff. She'd eat Celine alive."
I went to get my coat.
The Ironvale tower downtown had a lobby three stories tall, all glass and grey stone, with a forty-foot Christmas tree made of white lights.
At eight-fifty on the Monday after Christmas it was full.
Celine stood in the middle of it all at the security desk.
She was holding a cardboard box.
It had a framed photo of her and Deena on top, a cactus and a pink stapler.
She was wearing a black blazer I'd seen on a mannequin at the outlets.
