Chapter 18: The Moot

The Allied Moot opened at noon in the great hall of Redhollow Lodge.

Three packs filled it to the rafters.

Stonecrest stood along the east wall with Ronan at its head.

Ashgrove's Alpha, a square woman in a hunting jacket, sat at the head table beside the Alpha of Wyndham, a huge man with a laugh you could hear from the car park.

Redhollow's own wolves packed the back, and half of them would not look at the floor.

I stood in the minstrel gallery above the door, with Holly at my side and the Council woman's page in my pocket.

I was there because Cedric had asked me to be.

"Let me walk in alone," he'd said, at the cabin, at dawn, with his hands on my face. "Let them see what I was. If I come in with your hand on me, they'll think I borrowed this."

"You'll fade."

"I know."

"You'll be standing in front of three packs with Ash gone dim."

"Then I'll be standing there as myself," he said. "For once."

I had hated it.

I had said yes.

Now I watched him walk up the long center aisle with the gate keys in his fist.

He looked tired.

To anyone who didn't know, he looked like a man the Moot could break.

Philippa stood at the lectern in her cream blazer, with a folder of papers in front of her and tears already on her cheeks.

"Honored Alphas," she said, and her voice shook just enough. "Friends. It gives me no pleasure to be here."

The room went quiet.

"Over the last month our Luna has abandoned her post. She took pack money. She fled to a neighboring Alpha with the heirs inside her. And my Alpha has not had the strength to bring her back."
