Chapter 21: Not Yet

That evening the great hall of Redhollow Lodge filled again, for the first supper of the Moot.

Philippa sat at the end of the head table with her plate of rabbit and greens.

Nobody spoke to her.

Cedric had been sewn up by Dr. Quince and wore a clean white shirt with the sleeve cut off over the bandage.

He did not take his seat.

He walked to the center of the floor, in front of all three packs, and waited until the hall was quiet.

Then he knelt.

It was a hard thing to watch.

He went down on both knees on the stone, a head taller than anyone in the room, and bowed his head.

"I have something to say to my Luna," he said. "I want my pack to hear it, and the allies to hear it, because they heard me say worse."

I put down my fork.

"Flora. A week after you told me you were pregnant, I signed a paper that said you would eat well. I thought that was enough. I never asked once whether you were eating."

He lifted his head.

"My study door is off its hinges as of this afternoon. It will never be shut on you again."

His voice dropped.

"When you walked out, I had you arrested, because it was easier to say you were a thief than to say I had failed you. Every part of that is mine. Nothing about it was Philippa's fault. She did what she did. I did what I did."

The hall was very still.

At the end of the table, Philippa had stopped chewing.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me," Cedric said. "You told me you haven't, and I haven't earned it. I'm asking for the chance to keep earning it, in front of everyone, for as long as you'll let me."
