Chapter 22: The Twins
Cedric carried me to the lodge clinic through the snow, and he did not put me down once.
"Abel!" he shouted down the corridor, in a voice that shook the lamps. "Abel!"
The same corridor where I had fainted at four months.
The same door at the end, which he had never opened.
This time he kicked it in.
Dr. Quince was up and in his shirtsleeves before the door hit the wall, and the Stonecrest healer came in behind him, still in her Moot dress, with her white hair coming down.
"How far apart?" she said.
"Three minutes," I gasped.
"Too early," Dr. Quince said quietly.
"Can you stop it?"
The two healers looked at each other.
"No," the Stonecrest woman said. "But wolf pups come early and strong, and yours have a Luna's blood. Now lie down, girl, and let your mate do something useful."
They put me on the bed.
Cedric knelt beside it and took my hand, and the first thing I felt was the bond open wide, the way it had in the cabin, and the second was Ash.
Breathe, he said, inside my head. I'm here. I have you.
I could hear him in Cedric's heartbeat.
"I can't," I said, as the next wave came. "Cedric, it's too soon. They're so small."
"They aren't small," he said. "They're coming to meet you."
"They're not ready."
"They're yours," he said. "They're ready."
It went on a long time.
The snow came down against the window, and the lamps burned low, and sometime after midnight Holly came in with a bowl of broth and was told by two healers at once to get out.
