Chapter 11: The Memorial Table
On Saturday night it rained, and Si-wan drove them himself.
He didn't say where.
Eun-ho sat in the passenger seat of the black sedan in a plain sweater and jeans, which he had never worn in front of Si-wan.
He watched the wipers fight the dark.
The city fell away.
The road climbed into pines, switchbacked twice, and ended at a small wooden gate with a lantern on a post.
"A temple," Eun-ho said.
"It keeps ash. My mother's."
Si-wan parked, took a bag from the back seat, and held an umbrella over both of them all the way up the stone steps.
Eun-ho had never seen him carry his own bag.
Inside, in a narrow hall that smelled of incense and wet wood, there was a wall of tiny glass doors, each with a name.
Si-wan's mother's was on the third row.
He set the bag on the little table before it and began to unpack.
A bowl of rice. Three pieces of rice cake. A paper cup of makgeolli, a peach, a pair of red slippers.
"She hated shoes," Si-wan said.
"She'd come in from the garden in the winter and kick them off in the hall, and my father would pick them up."
Eun-ho stood very still.
He didn't want to be a stranger in the room, and he didn't know what else to be.
"Come here," Si-wan said.
Eun-ho went to stand beside him.
Si-wan lit a stick of incense and bowed, twice, to the glass, and Eun-ho bowed too, because it seemed right.
