Chapter 24: Who in This Room
The Registry's bond office was on the fourth floor of a grey municipal building in Jung-gu.
The woman behind the counter was the officer who had cuffed Eun-ho in the lobby.
She looked at Eun-ho.
She looked at Si-wan.
She looked at the cream-colored Form 12 on the counter, signed in two places in two different inks.
"Mr. Moon," she said.
"Officer."
"Mr. Ha."
"Officer."
She picked up the form and read it all the way through, slowly.
Ji-yu stood at Eun-ho's elbow in a clean white blouse, holding a paper cup of coffee and vibrating with joy.
"For the record," the officer said, "I filed the false declaration charge against you in good faith."
"I know."
"The Registry has withdrawn it."
"After the Vice Chairman's tape, and the prosecutor's office filing this morning, the magistrate agreed that you were a victim of coercion."
Her mouth did something small. "You'll owe a fine of two hundred thousand won."
"I can pay it."
"I'd imagine."
She stamped the form.
The sound was heavy, wet, final.
"Bond declared," she said. "Effective today."
She slid a plastic card across the counter.
It had Eun-ho's name on it, and his picture from the lobby, and in the box marked STATUS a single word.
Omega.
Under it, in smaller letters, bonded to Ha Si-wan.
Eun-ho held it between two fingers.
It was the first official paper he had ever owned that said what he was.
"For six years," he said, "I thought if I saw that word on a card I'd throw up."
