Chapter 4: The Empty House
The wake was at three, in the pack hall, with casseroles.
At two-forty, Bram and I were standing in the black pines behind the Alpha house.
"I'm only doing this once," he said. "Tell me why again."
"Because he kept something in the bottom drawer of his study desk. His brother's old phone."
"And you want a dead man's phone."
"I want what's on it. Cormac never listens to it. I've dusted around that drawer for two years and I know what he does when he thinks I'm not looking."
Bram studied the house.
It was a big gray lodge of logs and glass, the kind of house you could see from the road.
I had lived in it for two years and had never once felt like it was mine.
"Back door," I said. "There's a spare key in the bread box."
"There's always a spare key in the bread box," Bram said. "It's how I know Alphas don't think."
I would have laughed, if my ribs hadn't been taped.
The kitchen door opened without a sound.
The kitchen was exactly as I had left it, except for the vase.
My vase, the blue one I had bought at a flea market with my own money, was gone from the windowsill.
A tall crystal one stood there instead, holding white lilies.
Lilies were Felicity's favorite.
I walked on without looking at it.
In the front hall stood three cardboard boxes, labeled in Cormac's square hand.
MORVEN, said the first.
MORVEN, said the second.
On the third, his handwriting had gotten careless.
MORVEN, OTHER.
Bram looked at them and then at me.
