Chapter 6: Put Him Outside

The man who came into the ferry office on Friday wore a Garrick Pack jacket and didn't bother to take it off.

I knew him by sight.

He was one of the elder's hunters, a heavy man who had once carried a deer carcass into my clinic and left blood on the floor.

"Miss Lindqvist," he said. "The elder sent me. You're coming home."

"No," I said.

The two ferry clerks beside me stopped typing.

"You're unreleased," the hunter said. "That makes you pack property until the Alpha says different."

He shrugged.

"The elder says the Alpha is soft on this, so the elder is taking it in hand."

He came around the counter.

"Don't touch me," I said.

His hand closed around my arm anyway.

It hurt, and my wolf rose under my skin with a snarl I'd never felt before.

The door banged open behind him.

"I'm going to take his hand off your arm," Ansel said, from the doorway. "Then I'm going to put him outside."

His voice was perfectly calm.

He had driven up that morning to bring me lunch, because I had said out loud on Thursday that I wanted soup.

He was holding a paper bag of it.

"Alpha," the hunter said, and the color left his face.

"Let go of her."

The hunter let go.

Ansel set the soup down on the counter with enormous care.

"Next, I'm going to carry you out the door," he said to the man, "and put you on the sidewalk. You can walk to your truck or I can carry you there too. Pick."
