Chapter 28: The Gate
Gunnar came out of the house behind me.
He looked down the drive at his nephew and went very still.
"I'll go," he said.
"No," I said. "He asked for me."
"Bryn."
"Stay on the porch. Let him see you there."
He looked at me a long moment. Then he sat down on the top step, with the kids lined up behind him in the doorway.
I walked down the drive alone.
The snow was packed hard in the ruts.
It was the same drive I'd walked up in my satin dress with five kids, two months ago.
Colt waited on the other side of the new gate.
Up close he looked worse.
His jacket was cheap. His jaw had three days of stubble on it. His hands were red from the cold.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi."
"Today's my fourteenth day," he said. "They said sundown. I'm on my way out."
"I know."
"I'm in a motel by the highway. They took the lodge. They took the truck. The bank took everything else." He laughed a little. "Turns out I owed a lot of people."
