Chapter 29: The Bite

We climbed the old trail by moonlight, with no flashlight at all.

He didn't need one anymore.

He held my hand the whole way and told me where every root was before my boot found it.

At the top the wind came through the notch from Idaho, sharp and clean.

The stone was white with frost.

Two names were cut into it. The old Alpha's, and Glory's father's.

Gunnar brushed the frost off both with his sleeve.

Then he turned around and looked up the slope at the flat gray rock, the watch post.

"I used to come up here every year on the Cold Moon," he said. "To tell my brother I hadn't done it yet. Made the boy worthy."

"And this year?"

"This year I came to tell him I quit."

He laughed a little, and his breath smoked.

"I told him the boy picked his own road. And I told him about you."

"What did you tell him?"

"That he had good taste. And bad aim."

I laughed, and it echoed off the rock.

He took both my hands.

He didn't kneel.

He just stood in front of me in the snow, where he'd held his dying brother.

The gold was coming up in his eyes.

"Bryn Prewitt," he said. "I'm asking. Not the pack. Not the moon. Me."

"Okay."

"Will you be my mate?"

"Yes."

He blinked. "I had more."

"Then say the rest."

"Will you be Luna of Blackfork? You'd have to run things. Fight with the council. Feed a lot of people."

"I already do all that."

"You can say no," he said. "To either one. To both. I'll still be here in the morning making bad coffee."

"Gunnar."

"Yes."

"Yes," I said. "Both. Yes."

He kissed me there with his cold hands on my face and the whole valley lit up below us.

When we came down, Fern was asleep on the couch with the baby asleep on top of her.

She opened one eye.

"Well?"

I held up my bare hand.

"He asked," I said.

Fern sat straight up, and the baby rolled off onto the cushions and bit her elbow.

"I KNEW it," she screamed, and woke up the whole house.

The mating ceremony was on Saturday, in the yard, at moonrise.

The whole pack came up the ridge.

They parked trucks all the way down the drive and out past the new gate.

The old mechanic strung lights from the barn to the porch. The pack mothers brought food until the tables bent.
