Chapter 20: Margo's Garden

The clinic garden lay behind the building, behind a chain-link fence and a gate Dessa had to unlock with a key she hadn't used in months.

Snow lay in the rows.

At the back stood a long plastic tunnel, the kind you use to keep beds alive through winter, with a little shed beside it.

Dessa waited for us at the tunnel's flap, still in her parka, with her jaw set so hard it shook.

"She took this over in September," she said. "She said the clinic needed lavender for the salve. She wouldn't let anyone help her. I thought it was grief."

"What did you find?" Kurt asked.

She pulled back the plastic flap.

The tunnel was warm inside, and humid, and green.

Along the bed grew rows of tall stalks with dark, hooded blue flowers, still in bloom in the middle of November.

I had never seen them in my life, and I knew them anyway.

Every child in every pack knew them.

"Wolfsbane," I said.

"Monkshood," said Dessa. "It shouldn't be in flower in November. Someone has kept this tunnel warm on purpose."

"Somebody's been watering it."

"Every day. I see her come out here with a can. I thought she was talking to the lavender."

She walked down the bed and pointed to the small row at the end.

Four pots of ordinary lavender sat there, alone, in a neat line, with a sign stuck in the dirt.

The rest of the long bed was blue flowers.

"It's a front," said Kurt. "Four pots for show."

"That's the whole garden," Dessa said. "That's what I walked past all autumn."

My knees felt strange.

I put my hand on the cold edge of the bed.

Kurt came up behind me and set his hand flat between my shoulder blades, and he said nothing, and I was grateful.
