Chapter 21: Sorrel

I had never shifted in anger.

Five years of being a good Luna had taught me to hold my wolf behind my teeth, and she had waited in there so patiently.

Now my coat hit the snow, and my sweater, and the world cracked open and came out gold.

It hurt for the length of one breath.

Then I was down on four feet in the dark, in a body made of nothing but speed.

Sorrel was a long-legged russet wolf, and the cold air poured into her lungs.

The cream coat was a pale smear among the pines, two hundred yards ahead.

I ran.

Snow flew up from my paws, and I heard Kurt shout behind me, once, and then stop.

He did not try to command me.

I would remember that later.

Margo ran badly in her good shoes.

She went through a drift to her thighs and fell, got up, fell again, and sobbed aloud as she crawled.

I came out of the trees fast, and she turned her white face up and screamed.

I took her down in one leap.

She hit the snow on her back with my forepaws on her shoulders, and I put my teeth against her throat.

I did not break the skin.

I held them there, so close that I felt her pulse beat against my lip.

The smell of her fear filled my head.

I thought of the pup.

I thought of the knitted blanket still folded in a drawer in a room painted cream.

I thought of every evening I had smoothed her salve into my wrists and thanked her.

Sorrel wanted the throat.

She wanted it with her whole body, and she was right, and I was shaking with how right she was.

Margo's eyes were wide and wet and green.

She lay perfectly still under my teeth, and I watched her work it out.

"Go on," she whispered. "Do it."

I didn't move.

"You'd like that, wouldn't you?" Her voice shook, but there was a thread in it that was almost a smile. "A dead widow in the snow, and the Luna with blood on her mouth. They'd put you out of the pack before the body was cold. Your new Alpha would have to hand you to the Elders."
