Chapter 32: Sixteen Weeks
The next Gathering fell on a Saturday in November, and it sleeted again.
I stood in the packhouse kitchen at noon with my sleeves pushed up, cutting onions.
Beside me stood the cook from Cinder Creek and the cook from Harrow Ridge, who had not yet agreed on a stew.
"Less pepper," said one.
"More," said the other.
"It's a pot for four hundred, not a duel."
I laughed, and wiped my eyes on my wrist.
"You're crying over onions again," said Dessa from the doorway.
"I'm crying over onions every day."
"That's not the onions."
She came in with a clipboard and a green parka and put her hand flat on my stomach without asking.
It was round now, firm and warm under my sweater.
Sixteen weeks.
I had counted every one of them on my fingers, and so had she.
"Heartbeat's perfect," said Dessa. "I scanned her again last night. Fingers, toes, a nose, an opinion."
"Her?"
"I said I wasn't supposed to say." She grinned. "She's got Kurt's chin."
"She has a chin?"
"She's a Kingscote. She came with a chin."
I put my hand over hers.
Her face went soft, and then she cleared her throat and went back to the clipboard.
"The salve," she said, handing me a small jar. "Lavender, from the clinic garden. I tested the oil three times, and I made it myself. You can use it on your hands."
"Is the garden clean?"
"I pulled up every root of the monkshood the day after Margo left. I burned them in the shed's ashes." She looked at the jar. "Lavender and almond oil, Fern. Nothing else, ever."
