Chapter 8: Sorrel Answers
"Say sit," Kurt told me. "Say it to him, like you mean it."
We were in the lodge yard at dawn with frost on the gravel.
Kurt's Beta stood ten feet away in his shirtsleeves.
He was a lean man with a braid down his back, and he didn't look eager.
"I don't use that voice," I said.
"You used it on the porch."
"I didn't use anything on the porch. They bowed on their own."
"Then do it on purpose."
I had spent five years being ordered, and I knew exactly what an order felt like from the inside.
It felt like my throat closing and my knees giving way.
I didn't want to put that on anybody.
"Fern," said the Beta gently. "It's only sit. I've been sat before."
I took a breath and spoke from low in my chest, the way Torin did.
"Sit."
The Beta sat.
It wasn't graceful. His knees went out from under him and he landed on the frozen gravel with a grunt.
He stared up at me with his mouth open.
"That wasn't Kurt," he said. "I felt it come from you."
"I'm sorry," I said. "I'm so sorry. Get up."
He got up.
Kurt hadn't moved or said anything.
He was watching me and nothing else.
"I don't have an Alpha's voice," I said. "I'm a Luna. Lunas hold the pack's heart. They don't give orders."
"Then something's wrong with the rule," said Kurt. "Come on. Get your coat."
