Chapter 15: The Steps

The observers looked at me.

So did a hundred and forty wolves.

"My human paper has a date on it," I said.

I took the folded scan out of my pocket.

I'd carried it every day since the second of October.

"Larch Falls County Hospital. October second, two in the morning. Eight weeks, six days. Heartbeat one sixty-eight. Due the eighth of May."

I held it up so the gray coats could read the stamp.

"That makes me twelve weeks and two days tonight," I said. "I'm not guessing. A machine measured him."

The observer took the paper and studied it.

"And Lacey," I said, "is fourteen weeks."

"Yes," Garrett said.

"Then she's due the first week of April."

"Yes."

"Then let's measure her too."

Lacey stopped crying.

It was very sudden.

"The hospital's open all night," I said. "It's twenty minutes. There's an Ironpine truck outside, or a Redmoor one, or the Council's own car. I don't care whose."

"She has a doctor's note," Garrett said.

"From him?"

I pointed down into the crowd.

The pack doctor was standing near the front, in a tweed jacket, with his hands clasped.

"From the doctor who listened to my lungs and called me barren," I said. "The Council can choose any doctor in Montana. Any scan, any machine. I'll pay for it."

The observer turned to Lacey.

"Will you consent to that?"

Lacey looked at Garrett.

Garrett was looking at the doctor.

The doctor was looking at the floor.

"Of course I will," Lacey said.

"Of course. Whatever the Council needs. I just need to sit down first."

She turned toward the steps.

Garrett's mother was holding out her arms to her from the front row.

Lacey stepped down onto the first step.

I was behind her, at the altar, with both my hands on the edge of the basket.
