Chapter 21: Cold Moon
"Then come across today," I said. "Right now. Get in our truck."
The doctor shook his head hard.
"If I'm gone tonight, she'll know by morning. She'll get to the Council before I do, crying about how Ironpine kidnapped an old man."
"Then when?"
"The morning of the hearing. Dawn. I'll walk to the bridge."
He held out his hand again.
"Your people drive me up the mountain. I walk into that lodge with Ironpine on both sides of me."
The Beta had come out of the store.
He'd heard the last of it.
"Dawn on the twenty-fourth," the Beta said. "We'll be there."
I gave the doctor his keys.
On the morning of the Cold Moon, we stood at the Ironpine end of the bridge in the dark.
Wyatt, the Beta, two warriors, and me in my good coat, five months along.
Dawn came gray over the Redmoor ridge.
Nobody walked down the river road.
At eight Wyatt said, "We can't wait any longer."
At eight-fifteen we left without him.
The Council lodge was three hours west, at the end of a switchback road above the snowline.
It was one long log hall with a fire at each end.
