I went to the bassinet.

The baby was awake.

She wasn't crying.

She was lying there with her eyes open, looking at the wall.

I picked her up.

"Our father," I said to Lacey, "told me at the feast that you were his grandchild's mother and I was a liar."

"So?"

"So I've had a while to get used to what he thinks I am."

I took the baby out to my mother's room and shut the door.

A week later the Redmoor elders asked me to come to Saturday supper in the great hall and bring the heir.

I hadn't eaten in that hall since the Harvest Moon.

Wyatt drove me up the ridge road at six, with Jed in the quilt sling.

I had a pie on my lap that my mother had sent so I wouldn't arrive with empty hands.

"I'll sit at the end," Wyatt said, as he parked. "And eat."

"You're not coming up front?"

"It's your hall," he said. "I'm a guest who likes their potatoes."

The great hall smelled the way it always had on Saturdays.

Roast beef, wood smoke, wet dogs, the floor wax the old Luna used to make the pups put down on their knees.

A hundred wolves at the long tables.

When I came in the door, the noise stopped.

Then the benches scraped, and the whole hall stood up.

The women nearest the door came to see Jed before I'd gotten three steps.
