Chapter 40: Midsummer

"Then I want her where everybody can see her," I said. "In the middle of the town end. Under a light."

"She'll be under a light," Wyatt said.

We set the tables up the middle of the bridge at four in the afternoon.

Nobody had enough tables, so both packs brought theirs.

The long pine boards from the Ironpine long room went end to end with the trestles from the Redmoor great hall.

They ran down the black deck in one crooked line, from the west end almost to the east.

The cloths didn't match.

The chairs didn't match.

Nobody cared.

By six both packs were sitting at them, and this time nobody had chosen sides.

Redmoor mothers sat next to Ironpine warriors.

The boy with the fossil was teaching two Redmoor pups how to spit off the rail into the river.

Their mothers were pretending not to see.

Halfway down, the white-braided Ironpine elder and the white-haired Redmoor chairman had been arguing for an hour about trout.

"Ours," the elder said. "Yours have a muddy taste."

"Because you've been fishing our water for nineteen years from the wrong side."

"Fifty years," the elder said. "I'm old. I'll fish where I like."

The cook from the great hall had brought roast pork.

The healer had brought her bread.

My mother had made pies again and wouldn't let anyone cut them until she said.

She was sitting at the end of a bench with Lacey's baby asleep in a sling across her chest.
