Chapter 11: What Sabine Said

Corbin's POV

I woke on the study floor at dawn with her scent still on my shirt.

For the first time in five years I wasn't afraid.

My wolf lay quiet and strong under my ribs. The bond was warm in my chest.

I had meant to tell her everything last night.

I had told her half, and then she had said touch me, and I had stopped being able to talk.

I sat up and pulled my ruined shirt around me, and found the beta standing in the doorway with two mugs.

"Don't say anything," I said.

"I won't." He handed me one. "You should know the night patrol saw Miss Whitcombe in the north wing at midnight."

"Doing what?"

"Standing outside the child's door."

Every muscle in my back tightened.

"And this morning she's gone in again," he said. "Dr. Roarke has just gone after her."

I was on my feet before he finished the sentence.

I took the stairs three at a time and came into the north wing corridor on silent bare feet.

I stopped at the corner when I heard Sabine's voice.

It was a voice I did not know.

It was low and flat and utterly without warmth.

"I'll say this once, because you strike me as a sensible woman," Sabine said. "Take your daughter and go home before the Hunter's Moon."

"Is that a request?" Rhiannon said.

"It's advice. Last night I smelled him all over you. Congratulations."

Rhiannon said nothing.

"I know what you think he is," Sabine said. "A man who panicked, who regrets it, who's ready to be better. He's none of that."

"He's a man who sells his name."

I stood very still with my hand against the cold plaster.
