Chapter 4: Night One

The whole pack of Hollowmere stood along the drive when I drove through the gate, and not one of them said a word.

I had never seen so many of them in one place.

The papers had been signed at noon. Eight packs, eight names, and Desmond's beta counting each one out loud.

Then I had kissed my daughter on the head in Moonbridge and left her with Hester.

I had driven three hours north to the house where I had lived for four years without being seen.

The wolves looked at my car, and then at me.

An old woman from the kitchens put her hand on her chest and bowed her head.

She had once slipped me bread across the pantry counter.

"Luna," she said.

One by one, the rest bowed their heads too.

My hands tightened on the wheel.

Nobody had ever called me that out loud on this land.

Sabine Whitcombe was waiting on the front steps in a grey coat, one hand at the small of her back. She came down to meet me.

"You must be exhausted," she said, and took my bag from the back seat before I could stop her. "I'm so sorry about the clinic. I didn't understand what I was walking into."

"You weren't walking into anything," I said. "It wasn't about you."

"It was about everyone, though, wasn't it?" She smiled, and it was warm. "Come on. I'll show you where you are."

She took a key off the ring at her belt and unlocked the north wing herself.

The corridor smelled of cedar and cold stone. The door at the end stood half open.

My room was exactly as I'd left it. The grey blanket was folded at the foot of the bed. A cup with a chipped handle still sat on the windowsill.
