Chapter 7: A House Call

Rhiannon's POV

I made Corbin sit on the edge of his own desk and I took out my penlight.

"Look at the wall," I said. "Now at me."

His pupils were wide and slow, and he did what I told him without a single remark.

That frightened me more than anything else he had done all week.

I took his wrist. His skin was hot, and his pulse under my fingers was running far too fast.

"How long has it been like this?"

"It's been like this since the clinic."

"Five years?"

"On and off."

"You never saw a doctor."

"I don't trust the pack's doctor." His mouth twisted. "She was in the room."

I let that go.

I had showered and changed my clothes twice since Moonbridge. Every stitch I had on was clean of my daughter, and I kept the desk between us as much as the room allowed.

"Take off your shirt," I said.

One eyebrow went up. "Is that an order?"

"It's a medical examination, and I'd like to listen to your heart."

"Does that count?"

"I'll let you know."

He undid the buttons himself and shrugged the shirt off one shoulder and then the other.

I had seen him bare to the waist before, on the nights he came to the north wing and left before dawn. I did not think about those nights.

I pressed the stethoscope to his chest.

The sound inside it was a hammering, wild and uneven.

I frowned. Then I took the stethoscope away and laid my palm flat over his breastbone instead, because some things a doctor can't hear.

I felt it at once.
