Chapter 12: The Hearing

The Royal Court sat in a round hall of grey marble, and every seat was full.

The video from the ballroom had gone through the capital in three days, and everyone had come to see the Brasks.

I sat at the long table on the left, with Hollis beside me in his black coat and Teague behind us with the files.

My father sat at the right table in his Alpha coat.

My mother sat next to him, and Sabine next to her, with a shawl around her shoulders and her eyes down.

Above us all, on a high bench, the Crown's Justice settled his robes and looked at the petition.

"Alpha Brask asks that Recruit Linnea Brask's contract be voided," he said, "on the grounds that she is a minor under pack law, and that the Command's instruments misread her."

"That's correct, Justice," my father said.

"Recruit Brask, you answer?"

I stood.

"I'm twenty-two, and the instrument didn't misread me," I said. "I'd like to prove it."

"How?"

"Test my sister on the Court's pulse stone."

My father started up from his chair.

"On the same stone the Command used on me, Justice. And I want it done twice."

A murmur went round the marble.

"Twice?"

"First with me out of the courtroom, behind a door, and again with me in the room."

The Justice looked at my father.

"Alpha Brask, you offered your younger daughter's rank as proof of your family's standing."
