Chapter 15: Silver

Everything went slow.

I saw Lucan turn.

I saw Bowen scramble up off his knees, too late, his hand reaching.

I saw the silver flash under the lanterns.

Three years ago I stood beside a fire and let something happen to me.

I didn't this time.

My wolf came up so fast my eyes burned.

I stepped into Evangeline instead of away from her.

I caught her wrist with both hands and twisted it out and down.

The knife skittered across the floorboards and spun under a table.

Evangeline went down on her back.

I went down on top of her, one knee on her chest, both her wrists pinned to the floor over her head.

My fangs were out.

I could feel them against my lip.

Evangeline stared up at me.

For the first time in her life she looked afraid of me.
