Chapter 16: I Walked Away

Nobody helped him up.

I didn't wait to see if anyone would.

Lucan and I walked out of the Ironwood pack house together, down the lantern-lit steps and across the dark lawn.

At the truck he opened my door, then stopped.

His hands were still shaking.

I could feel his wolf pacing under his skin, all that rage with nowhere left to go.

He took my face in both hands and kissed me, right there in Helena's driveway, in front of every wolf crowding the windows.

It wasn't a gentle kiss.

It was a claim, and the whole Ironwood pack house was the witness.

He walked me back against the side of the truck without breaking it.

The cold metal hit my spine, and his heat hit everything else.

My hands fisted in his shirt, and I kissed him back just as hard, my wolf still burning behind my eyes from the knife.

He growled into my mouth.

His mouth went down my jaw to the mark on my shoulder, and he pressed his lips to it above the neckline of my green dress.

It flared warm.

Somebody upstairs dropped a curtain.

"You stopped a silver knife with your bare hands," he said against my mouth.

"I was angry."

"Remind me never to make you angry."

I laughed.

It was the first time I'd laughed in that house in years.

"Let them look," I said. "Three years I ate in her kitchen."

"Then give them something to remember."

He kissed me again, slower this time, one hand spread over my stomach and the other in my hair, until my knees went soft and I had to hold onto his collar to stay standing.

When he finally let me breathe, his eyes were gold all the way through.

"Get in the truck, Luna," he said, low. "Before I forget we have a son to get home to."

"And after he's asleep?"

His thumb dragged slowly along my lower lip.

"After he's asleep, you're mine until the sun comes up."

My whole body answered before I did.

I got in the truck.

He drove home with his hand on my thigh the whole way, and he didn't once go under the speed limit.

Two of our warriors were sitting on the porch steps of Silvermoor House, where Odile had left them.

They took one look at Lucan's eyes, nodded to me, and melted into the pines.

Asher was asleep on his back with the yellow digger under his arm.

Lucan stood over him for a full minute, breathing him in, making sure.

Then he turned around in the dark of the nursery doorway and looked at me.

I took his hand and walked him down the hall to our room.

This time I was the one who kicked the door shut.

I kicked the door shut and he was already turning, already reaching for me, but I got there first.

My hands hit his chest and he let me push him back onto the bed.
