Chapter 12: The Pelt Walk
The Hall came to the Beal wharf on the Saturday with forty wolves on three flatbed trucks.
They came slowly, at noon, and the whole Bay stood along the rail and watched them roll down the Beals Island road.
I stood at the head of the planks with my hands in my coat pockets.
Armand stood on my right, level with me.
Verna sat at her card table on my left, with the black ledger shut in front of her.
The trucks stopped.
The Hall's wolves got down, in their good jackets, and formed two lines on the wharf.
Four men carried a long cedar pole between them with the hide laid over it.
I had seen it every day for a year, hanging over a hearth.
It was different in daylight.
It was gray-brown, thick and coarse, and the head hung down with its jaws open.
The throat was torn open in a long ragged line, and the fur there was stiff and dark.
