Chapter 21: The Trestle
We carried the hide back to Vanceboro on the first Saturday of December, wrapped in canvas in the bed of Armand's truck.
The St. Croix was black and fast between its banks, with a shelf of gray ice along each edge.
The railroad trestle crossed it high above, and I did not look up at it.
I looked at the ice below it, where my father and my brother had lain down.
Armand parked on the Maine bank.
He took the long bundle out of the truck bed himself and carried it on his shoulder down the path to the ice.
I walked beside him with my father's buoy in my hand.
On the other side of the river the New Brunswick pack stood along the bank in the cold.
There were forty of them, in parkas and wool caps, with their breath going up in the still air.
None of them spoke.
A woman crossed the river ice toward us alone.
She was lean and gray at the temples, about forty, in a quilted parka that had been patched at the elbow.
She stopped three paces from me.
"I am the Alpha of the New Brunswick pack now," she said. "The Book said you are the Bay's."
"I am."
"Then I will say it plainly. Your brother killed my father."
"Yes," I said.
"My father crossed this river to take it, and he killed yours."
"He did."
"Then they died on the same ice," she said. "And a third man skinned my father and wore him home."
She looked at the bundle on Armand's shoulder.
"I want him back," she said. "That is all I came for."
