Chapter 9: Slack Tide
There was frost on the planks at six, and the harbor lay flat and gray.
Slack water was twenty minutes off, and the whole Bay stood along the rail to watch it come.
I had never seen so many people on the Beal wharf.
Every captain was there, and their wives, and the sternmen, and the old men from the co-op.
The kids sat on the stacked traps with their boots swinging.
Verna sat at her card table at the head of the wharf with the black ledger open.
"Counter's here," she said. "Keeper, step up."
Dwight came down the planks from the Hall trucks.
He had on a Thurston Timber sweatshirt, and he rolled his neck as he walked.
Behind him stood eleven Hall wolves in a line, grinning.
I gave Armand my coat.
I took off my boots and my sweater and my jeans, in the cold, in front of forty captains and their wives.
