Chapter 24: First Snow
At ten to six the next morning, the snow lay six inches deep on the apron at Ridley Siding.
He had shoveled it.
I came up the county road in the dark with my headlights on the white.
The whole weigh-bed had been cleared, and the step, and the path to the door, in neat square lines.
He stood at the end of the path in his canvas coat, with his hat in one hand and a long pine box under his arm.
I stopped the truck and walked up to him.
The air smelled of woodsmoke and cold, and the bond in my neck was warm.
"You shoveled my scale," I said.
"There was nine hundred pounds of snow on the bed," said Soren.
"I thought it might throw your weights."
"It would have," I said.
"I'd have been off by forty."
His mouth quirked.
"I know," he said.
I unlocked the door and turned on the heater and the lamp.
I opened the ticket book and uncapped my pen.
He stood in the doorway with the snow behind him.
"The first truck's at seven," I said.
"I'll wait," he said.
"You don't have to wait today."
I put the pen down.
"Come in."
He came in and shut the door and turned the lock.
"I've got something for you," he said.
"It isn't the Ness place.
"You've given that back, and I'm not going to argue.
"This is something else."
He held out the box.
It was plain pine, with a brass catch.
I carried it to the desk and opened it.
Inside, on a bed of folded flannel, lay a brass key.
It was long and worn smooth along the shank, with a loop of red twine through the bow.
"The weigh shed key," I said.
"The one you laid on the elders' table," said Soren.
"I kept it for two months.
"I couldn't make myself put it back in my father's drawer."
I picked it up.
