Soren's POV
I didn't decide to carry her.
I found myself on my feet in the loft with her in my arms and the lantern swinging.
Her face was hot against my neck, and she was saying my name in a voice that went through me.
Every alpha on the Ness place would smell it by now.
Four of them slept in the bunkhouse a hundred yards away.
I went down the ladder one-handed with her weight on my chest.
I carried her across the yard in the rain.
The bunkhouse door opened, and a man put his head out.
I looked at him.
The head went in, and the door shut.
The heat room lay under the old kitchen, down eleven stone steps.
It was a cold dry cellar with a narrow bed, a basin, a heavy door and a bolt on the inside.
Every pack house has one.
My grandmother spent three days in ours the winter she bore my father.
I set Kari on the bed.
She clutched at my shirt.
Her eyes were glazed and wide, and the scent coming off her was so strong that my teeth ached.
"Soren," she said.
"Please."
I took her hands off my shirt.
