Chapter 21: What He Earned

Ten days after the ford, Corbin stood up in the great hall with his side in a pressure wrap and gave away the pack.

I came because Tobias asked me to, and because I wanted to see it with my own eyes.

Ewan came with me, and sat in the last row with his arm in a clean bandage and his knee against mine.

Corbin did not take the circle.

He stood at the edge of it, gray in the face, and held the green pack roll against his chest.

"I was Alpha of this pack for four years," he said. "I was a bad one, and I didn't know it."

"My strength was never mine to boast about. It came to me down a line I didn't know existed, and I took it for granted."

"What I have left is what's actually mine, and it's less than you were told you had."

Murmurs went along the benches.

"A pack should have an Alpha who sees what's in front of him," Corbin said. "Tobias saw a dead man's note, and I sent him away. He saw Tiffany, and I called it grief."

"I'm giving him the roll, if the pack will have him."

Tobias had gone white under his freckles.

"Corbin," he said under his breath. "I'm not..."

"You are," Corbin said. "You crossed a river on foot to tell my wife the truth when I'd have thrown you out for it."

He held the roll out.

The pack was silent for a moment, and then an older woman near the front stood.

It was the same woman who had looked at the floor during the apology.
