Chapter 16: Three Days
Soren's POV
My pack set up the Vacancy watch in Hilkka Laitinen's hayfield, outside the boundary line, with folding chairs and a cooler.
I had not asked for it.
Eleven of my wolves had driven in overnight from Copper Harbor with a tent, a whiteboard and a pocket thermometer.
The whiteboard said POOL across the top.
Under it, in my Beta's handwriting, were forty-three names and a column of odds.
"What are the odds on?" I said.
"Whether you feel it," said my Beta.
"Feel what?" I said.
"Anything. A tug. A warmth in the chest. The folk accounts say a warmth."
"That's what the thermometer is for," she added.
"I'm not putting a thermometer in my mouth."
"It's not for your mouth," said my Beta. "It goes under your arm. You take it at sunrise, noon and sunset."
So the next morning I stood in a field in my undershirt with a glass thermometer under my arm.
Eleven wolves and a goat watched.
It read ninety-eight point four.
My Beta wrote it down.
