Chapter 9: Juniper

"I cook with juniper," I said. "It's a Spokane habit."

Emmett smiled.

"Spokane doesn't have juniper," he said. "I looked it up."

He took my elbow, gently, and walked me down the hall away from the Alpha's door.

I let him, because a scene would wake Tobias.

"I'm going to give you a choice, Lena," he said. "Whatever your name is. You leave Stonebrook today, by the east road, and I don't tell him what you are."

"What am I?"

"A Redcliff wolf with a grudge, sleeping in my Alpha's bed." His voice stayed pleasant. "I don't care what you want from him. I care that he's soft this week."

"Soft."

"He's about to confess to a blood crime in front of the Moot because he found a child's shoe." Emmett shook his head. "I've served him since we were boys. I won't watch him throw away Stonebrook for a stranger who cries in the ash."

"Then tell him."

"If I tell him, he'll protect you. Look at his face when he looks at you." Emmett let go of my arm. "No. You'll go on your own, and he'll think you left him."

"And if I won't?"

"Then I'll find out who you are," he said. "I always do."

He walked away, smiling, with his hands in his pockets.

I stood there with my heart going.

The summons came at noon.

A courier in a black coat drove up the hill in a dusty truck and handed it to Odessa through the window.

The whole hall gathered, because a Moot seal on an envelope was not private news.

Two hundred wolves crowded the great room, packed shoulder to shoulder.

Tobias stood on the dais with the envelope in his hand.
