Chapter 16: Before the Moon
"The smokehouse was the second," I said.
The man nodded.
"And the third?"
He looked at Gwenna's rope, then at Emrys, then back at me.
"Your inn," he said. "The full moon. At moonrise, when everybody's up at the pack fire."
Nobody moved.
"She said there'd be nobody home," he said. "Nobody that counted. Just strays."
The widow's kids slept in the room over the kitchen.
The boy slept with his boots on.
Emrys turned around and walked to the edge of the hollow and stood there with his back to us.
I heard him breathing.
"How much?" I said.
"Three hundred a job. Half up front." He shrugged inside his ropes. "She brought me the boot herself. Said she found it on a snag when she drove the Line road."
"Why'd you take it?"
"Lady, I've been turned back over that Line three times." His voice went flat. "Last time it was by a captain with a scar on her jaw."
Gwenna went very still.
I looked at him properly.
I didn't remember him.
