Chapter 23: Rehomed
I opened it.
She sat in the bottom of the box on a folded silk scarf of my mother's.
She looked up at me with total contempt.
"Took you long enough," she said.
Ben's sister put her in the bottom kennel, the same one, across from the tabby.
The tabby took one look, turned her back and went to sleep.
For three weeks I fed her, and cleaned her kennel, and gave her shots when she needed them, and let her say whatever she wanted.

Ben was upstairs. The heat lamp buzzed.
"So," I said. "Talk. This is the last time I'm going to listen."
"You want me to say I'm sorry," she said.
"I want to know if you are."
"No."
She said it simply, the way she used to say she didn't like olives.
"I had a year in that house, Annie. A year of him hitting me and her smiling and the old man's cold hands on my neck. And when I went off that roof, I looked down, and there you were. Asleep. In the sun. In somebody's arms."
