Chapter 5: Back Board

"Daisy Vandermeer," I said. "She was my grandmother."

The tabby kept purring against my neck.

Ben didn't uncross his arms.

"Your grandmother died in June," he said. "Your father's assistant dropped this cat off the day after the funeral. He said someone would call about the bill."

"Nobody called."

"Nobody called," he agreed. "I sent eleven invoices to East 73rd Street. I sent one by certified mail. I think it's framed in somebody's bathroom."

His sister made a small noise in the doorway.

"Ben spent the first month thinking a Vandermeer would show up," she said. "Then he bought her a heated bed out of his own pocket."

"It was on sale," Ben said.

"It was forty dollars."

"It was on sale from sixty."

I looked at the top kennel.

There was a heated bed in it, plaid, with an orange dent in the middle.

"How much do we owe you?" I asked.

His sister pulled a folder from under the counter.

"Board, thirty-two a day. Vaccines. One dental, which she fought like a wolverine. Nine thousand two hundred and fourteen dollars."

"Plus the bed," Ben said.

"You said it was a gift."

"I'm feeling less generous."

"I'll be back in twenty minutes," I said.

I set the tabby down in her kennel. She glared at me for leaving.

There was a bank on Delancey with the same name as my new one.

I walked out of it with twelve thousand five hundred dollars in an envelope.

When I came back, the waiting room had filled up.

A man with a three-legged pit bull. A teenage boy holding a shoebox with a pigeon in it. A woman with a carrier that hissed.

I walked past all of them to the counter and laid the envelope down in front of Ben's sister.
