Chapter 6: The Car

"No," I said. "You can't."

The man with the clipboard turned around.

He looked me up and down, the bandage, the old sneakers, the cat hair all over Daisy's cashmere.

"Lady," he said, "your mom just gave us a car."

"It isn't hers to give," I said. "It's in my name. It has a tracker. And there's a camera right over your head."

Both men looked up at the little black dome in the ceiling.

My father had installed it to catch the maids stealing teaspoons.

"In about ten minutes," I said, "I report a stolen Range Rover, and the NYPD gets a very nice video of you two taking it."

The man with the neck tattoo shifted his weight.

"Take it up with the boss," the clipboard man said.

"Happy to."

I walked up three stairs, took Bradley's phone right out of his good hand and held it up to his face.

It unlocked.

"Hey!" he yelped. "Give it back!"

His recent calls were all one number, saved under BOOKIE DO NOT IGNORE.

I pressed it.

It rang twice.

"Bradley," said a bored voice. "Tell me you've got my money."

"This is his sister," I said. "Your guys are in my foyer taking my car for his debt."

A pause.

"Your mom said that was fine."

"My mom doesn't own it. I do. If it leaves this block, I report it stolen with video. You'd rather have something clean."

Another pause, longer.

"I'm listening."

I looked at Bradley on the stairs.

His tracksuit. The gold chain.

The watch on his good wrist, which I knew from Daisy's memories cost more than Ben's clinic made in a year.

"My brother has a Porsche in his own name," I said. "A drawer upstairs with six watches in it. A sneaker collection he keeps in climate control. All his, all paid for, all yours, tonight, with no police."
